Our Vision
Upward Scholars is the only 501(c)(3) nonprofit in the Bay Area providing financial, academic, career development, and holistic support to adults struggling with economic hardship so they can transition from adult schools to community colleges, attend college part-time, and gain economic mobility. We envision a future where adult immigrant students reach their full potential with the support of an engaged community.
Our Mission
To realize our vision, Upward Scholars provides adult immigrants the boost they need to move up the economic ladder through education and career development support. As a result of our work, adult immigrant college students continue their education, get higher paying jobs, and serve as role models and advocates for their children and our community.
Our Guiding Principles
EQUITY – We recognize that adult immigrant students face barriers as they strive to reach their full potential. In solidarity, we commit to providing educational and career development opportunities for adult immigrants, meeting them where they are on their journey, and helping them build a strong foundation. We provide support and tools to help our students become proficient in English and achieve their educational and career goals to move up the economic ladder and break the cycle of poverty.
INTEGRITY – We commit to respecting, valuing, honoring, and accepting each other and our community of students, volunteers, donors, and partners. We are truthful and transparent in our interactions, consider all voices in our decision-making, and collectively support agreed-upon outcomes. We are reliable and responsible and strive for excellence. We inspire others and serve as role models.
COMMUNITY – We commit to cultivating partnerships between diverse groups in the community to build a network of support for our students. We recognize that we accomplish more if we strive to complement rather than duplicate existing community resources.
