There's a word we use a lot at Upward Scholars: upward. But what does it really mean? For adult immigrants in the Bay Area, the climb is steeper than most people know.

"Upward" means something specific and hard-won for our students. It means learning English and feeling confident to speak up. It means earning a certificate or degree in a new language in a country that isn't always welcoming, while working and caring for others. It means leaving a low-wage job for a career with a family-sustaining wage, often while navigating the pressures of rising living costs and displacement.

For 16 years, Upward Scholars has made it possible for over 1,560 working adults to persist in their community college education and pursue the degree or professional training necessary to improve their lives and careers, uplift their families, and advance our community.
