About Upward Scholars

Upward Scholars provides adult immigrants the boost they need to move up the economic ladder through education and career development support. Through our work, adult immigrant college students continue their education, get higher-paying jobs, and serve as role models and advocates for their children and our community.

We're Looking For

  • Individuals passionate about immigrant rights and adult education

  • Strategic thinkers ready to take on board leadership roles

  • Professionals who can strengthen Upward Scholars’ impact and sustainability

  • Community leaders who bring diverse perspectives and connections to our target communities

Board Member Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic guidance and organizational oversight

  • Actively participate in board meetings and committees and drive key initiatives as appropriate

  • Engage in fundraising and serve as an ambassador for our mission

  • Willing to step into board leadership positions (e.g., committee chair, etc.)

Ideal Candidate Profile

  • Prior board experience and/or leadership experience in nonprofit, business, education, or community organizations a plus

  • Cultural humility and understanding of the barriers facing adult immigrants living in low-income households

  • Strong personal/professional network in San Mateo County

  • Commitment to creating welcoming, accessible environments where all can thrive

  • Ability to dedicate time to board service and leadership responsibilities – approximately 5 hours per month
