The Unexpected Warmth of Community: Marvin's Story

Marvin is a Salvadoran immigrant who began his educational journey at Sequoia Adult School and later transferred to Cañada College. There, he continues his English studies while working in construction fire safety. Like most Upward Scholars students, Marvin balances work and school and navigates rising living costs and a volatile socio-political environment, all while striving to build a more stable financial future for himself and his family.

Last fall, Marvin suddenly faced a housing crisis when he had to unexpectedly move out of his Redwood City apartment. At the same time, his work hours were significantly reduced due to seasonal and economic slowdowns. With limited income and no affordable short-term housing options, Marvin was at serious risk of homelessness. Through Upward Scholars’ Emergency Fund, he received critical support to cover moving costs—allowing him to rent and furnish a room in East Palo Alto, easing immense financial and emotional stress during a time of great need.

“I am genuinely surprised by how much I've been supported by Upward Scholars,” Marvin shared. “I didn't imagine that this kind of support and program existed… It’s a warm sense of community that I was surprised to find. I feel lucky to have found them.” In a 2025 student survey, 79% of students said they could not have continued their education without Upward Scholars' support. Today, Marvin feels calmer and more secure, allowing him to stay enrolled, continue working, and move forward toward a career in construction fire safety that will benefit the broader community.
