Learn or improve your Spanish with an Habla Más Spanish coach!
Habla Más, which means “speak more” in Spanish, provides non-Spanish speaking adults, youth, and children the opportunity to study Spanish with an Upward Scholars student who has been trained as a paid Spanish coach. Because of the pandemic, we changed the focus of Habla Más from a face-to-face model to a video model in which students meet with their Habla Más coach remotely.
Habla Más has proven so successful – about 50 people currently study Spanish with an Habla Más coach – that we have trained a new cohort of coaches, bringing the number of certified Habla Más coaches to ten, all pictured above.
About Habla Más
Who are Habla Más coaches? Habla Más coaches are native Spanish speakers who are current or former Upward Scholars students. All coaches complete a 20-hour training focused on learning how to provide high-quality, professional, individualized Spanish instruction.
What kinds of students do Habla Más coaches work with? Coaches work with adults with all levels of Spanish as well as youth and children from preschool through high school.
How often do coaches and students meet? Coaches typically meet with students for 30- or 60-minute sessions once or twice a week over Zoom or another video platform.
How much do lessons cost? Coaches' prices are included in their profiles. Your first lesson is always free!

Zoom Zumba with Upward Scholar student Raquel
Growing up in Mexico, Upward Scholar student Raquel danced her way through her childhood and has been dancing ever since. Prior to the pandemic, Raquel taught Zumba at a studio in Redwood City in addition to working full-time as a custodian and taking a full class load at Cañada College. Not wanting to relinquish her passion, Raquel currently teaches Zumba via Zoom from 10 to 11 a.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, and she'd love you to join the party! The suggested donation is $10 a class, payable via Venmo or check. Feel free to contact Raquel for more information at rrodriguez011181@gmail.com or simply join the class. You may want to arrive a few minute early to introduce yourself to Raquel and meet other students.
